The Guyver: All-American Armstrong, contaminated by an extraterrestrial device, finds that he is an armored superhero, an excellent thing, as long as virtually everyone else in the film might turn into a frightening beast, like CIA representative Hamill, who turns into a large cockroach. Awkward clumps of humor only make the contrived structure appear even more mindless. (92 minutes, 1992)
Night Nurse: Phenomenal, hard story of nurse (Stanwyck) who couldn’t disregard bizarre goings on in home where she works. Blondell adds zingy aid and it is one of Gable’s most impressive early appearances. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Ben Lyon, Joan Blondell, Clark Gable, Charlotte Merriam, and Charles Winninger.
Sugar Cane Alley: Beautifully made, heart felt drama in regards to an II-year-old boy and his all sacrificing nana, gettimg by in a Martinique shantytown throughout the 1930s. The film is a humanist drama of the highest request. Cast includes Precious Legitimus, Garry Cadenat, Routa Seck, Joby Bernabe, and Francisco Charles. (107 minutes, 1984)
Delusion: Hard, tight thriller in reference to a yuppie pc executive-embezzler and his plight after seeing a Las Vegas show gal and her hit man boyfriend (Secor, in an eye-opening acting job) on a Death Valley freeway commit a killing. Cast includes Jim Metzler, Jennifer Rubin, Kyle Secor, Robert Costanzo, Tracey Walter, and Jerry Orbach. (100 minutes, 1990)
Down in the Delta: With her life a mess and essentially no desiere to work, lone mother Woodard boards the bus with her 2 kids to spend the summer in the Mississippi Delta, living with family members and worlking in their restaraunt. Episodic drama recoups from awkward start to better points for utter likability. Woodard beams and Freeman gives one of the best acting jobs of his career. Cast includes Alfre Woodard, Al Freeman, Jr., Wesley Snipes, Mary Alice, Esther Rolle, and Loretta Devine. (111 minutes, 1998)
Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School: While a current widower assists a dying mishap sufferer it sets in motion a journey to find the poor man’s long lost love at a school reunion. This leads to a ballroom dance school and a dull, hokey, excessively sentimentalized tale. Cast includes Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, Sean Astin, John Goodman, Mary Steenburgen, Donnie Walhberg, David Paymer, Camryn Manheim, Adam Arkin, Sonia Braga, and Elden Henson. (103 minutes, 2006)
