John Grisham has been one of America’s most beloved writers since 1989. His books have sold over 250 million copies worldwide. The majority of his books, actually seventeen in all, are legal fiction nevertheless he has authored four non-legal fiction works and one non-fiction book. As of this writing there have been ten films made from his effort with one in the works.

“The Client” starring the late Brad Renfro, Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones was released in 1994. This movie follows the course of a adolescent boy who involuntarily witnesses a suicide and is as a result pursued by the mafia for information they think he learned from the dying man.
The very first novel written by Grisham was made into a film in 1996. “A Time to Kill” introduced the world to an up and coming new actor, as it was one of Matthew McConaughey’s first leading roles. Also starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. “The Chamber” starring Chris O’Donnell, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway also came out in 1996.
Matt Damon took the lead role in “The Rainmaker” in 1997. He played a rookie lawyer who takes on a influential insurance company on behalf of a boy denied medical treatment. In 1998, “The Gingerbread Man” starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr. came out. This is the only Grisham movie that you will not be able to find as a novel because it came from an unpublished manuscript.
Two of the non-legal fiction writings by Grisham have also been made into movies. “A Painted House” came out in 2003 and in 2004, the holiday favorite, “Christmas with the Kranks”, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, based upon the storyline “Skipping Christmas”.
“The Runaway Jury” starring Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz was released in 2003. The next movie is intended for release in the year 2012. It is “The Associate”, which was released as a book in January 2009.
Grisham has unquestionably been one of the most famous and fertile writers in the recent past. With twenty-two works out and an additional planned for November 2009, 10 films and one more considered for 2012, he has never failed to entertain us.
