The Front Page: First filming of the Hecht-MacArthur play is strainful, ludicrous, and flamboyantly prompted. This version stands up relatively well alongside the redo. Cast includes Adolphe Menjou, Pat O’Brien, Mary Brian, Edward Everett Horton, Walter Catlett, Mae Clarke, and George E. Rock. (103minutes, 1931)
The King of Comedy: Pungent black comedy in reference to a show business hanger-on and total loser who cherishes America’s top Television comic talk show host and computes out a weird plan to get some air time. G.O.R.P.: Sophomoric, depressingly unfunny durg-oriented comedy set in a summer camp. Cast includes Michael Lembeck, Dennis Quaid, Philip Casnoff, Fran Drescher, David Huddleston, Robert Trebor, Julius Harris, and Rosanna AIquette. (90 minutes, 1980)
The Search: Poignant drama of American cadet Clift regarding for concentration camp survivor Jandl in postwar Berlin, when the boy’s mommy despondently searches all the camps for him. Beautifully performed and directed. Cast includes Montgomery Clift, Ivan Jandl, Aline MacMahon, Jarmila Novotna, and Wendell Corey. (105 minutes, 1948)
R.P.M.: Old styled lenient Quinn gets to be head of university, and then approves a patrol bust of liberals to spare establishment. Inept Erich Segal script, comparably poor Kramer direction gives the film a certain camp value. Cast includes Anthony Quinn, Ann-Margret, Gary Lockwood, Paul Winfield, Graham Jarvis, and Alan Hewitt. (97 minutes, 1970)
Lightning the White Stallion: Incredibly weak family fare with Rooney a prosperous guy whose racehorse is stolen. Cast includes Mickey Rooney, Isabel Lorea, Susan George, and Billy Wesley. (95 minutes, 1986)
The Stalking Moon: Army scout helps white female who has lived with the Apaches to flee with her youthful half breed child, when boy’s dad comes after them. Convincing fascinating Western is both smooth and boring. Cast includes Gregory Peck, Eva Marie Savior, Robert Forster, Noland Clay, Russell Thorson, and Frank Silvera. (109 minutes, 1969)
