One of America’s most adored writers is John Grisham. Since 1989, his books have sold over 250 million copies globally. He has written 17 legal fiction books with a new legal fiction due out in November 2009, 4 non-legal fiction books and one non-fiction book. There have been 10 films made from his books so far with another anticipated in 2012.

The first movie from one of his books was “The Firm” in 1993. Tom Cruise plays a Harvard law school graduate who starts working for a Memphis law firm with connections to the underworld. Also starring Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman. Again in 1993, the 2nd movie from a Grisham book came out. “The Pelican Brief” starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.

In 1994, “The Client” was released. In this movie a young boy by chance witnesses a suicide and he is consequently chased by the mafia for what they think the dying man may have confided in him. “The Client” starred Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and the late Brad Renfro.

The very first book written by Grisham was made into a movie in 1996. “A Time to Kill” introduced the world to an up and coming new actor, as it was one of Matthew McConaughey’s first primary roles. Also starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey. “The Chamber” starring Chris O’Donnell, Gene Hackman and Faye Dunaway was also released in 1996.

Matt Damon took the lead role in “The Rainmaker” in 1997. He played a brand new lawyer who takes on a influential insurance company on behalf of a boy denied medical treatment. In 1998, “The Gingerbread Man” starring Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey, Jr. came out. This is the only Grisham film that you will not be able to find as a book because it came from an unpublished manuscript.

Two of Grisham’s non-legal fiction books have been made into films, “A Painted House” in 2003 and “Christmas with the Kranks”, starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, which is adapted from the book “Skipping Christmas”.

“The Runaway Jury” came out in 2003. This show starred Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, John Cusack and Rachel Weisz. Grisham’s 21st book, “The Associate”, just released as a book in January 2009, will be released as a movie in 2012.

John Grisham has been one of the most popular and prolific authors in recent history, with 22 stories and one more being released in November 2009, 10 films and another in 2012.
