Internet marketing is a joke. In a few years, it’ll be gone, just like half the companies that call you every day pestering you for your money.
I know. I used to be in internet marketing. I learned pretty fast that my industry was total fakery, and I quit because I couldn’t stand it any more. By the time you’re done reading this, you’ll understand why:
ANYONE – and I mean anyone – can build a web site or have one built for $250 or less. Go to a template site, buy a template and set up your site. Bam, you’re done. Or use a free site like WordPress.com. Or hire someone for $150 to build it. Whatever, you’ll get 90% of what you’d get by paying someone $10,000.
And NO ONE can write content for your company like you can. You understand your business and industry and have lots of good ideas. So write some cool stuff every day, put it up on your new site and you’re good to go. Or hire someone for $20 an article.
No one knows the secret sauce for the search engines, either (except the search engines). Are you seriously going to hire a specialist to get you search traffic when even they have no clue how to do it?
Plus, it’s a losing proposition from the start. Unless you’re the first person in your industry to build a web site, your competitors have invested a lot of time and money in building their rankings and PPC (pay per click) campaigns. You can’t beat them by going head-to-head.
How do you tell the scammers from the real marketers? It’s impossible. Look at 10 internet marketing sites. Bet you can’t tell who’s for real and who’s not.
It’s way too expensive. One guy told me he’d charge me $5000 a month for an SEO campaign (search engine optimization). $5000?!!! I’d have to quintuple my sales to make that pay. Forget it.
But the real kicker was when someone told me that the rules of internet marketing change all the time. E-mail marketing? Worked for a while. Now spam filters and laws prevent you from using it. Search engines? They change their algorithms for ranking so often that an SEO expert told me they have no idea what makes you move up. Nice.
So stop paying for internet marketing. Invest in your own skills, and learn to do it yourself. Spend your money on that and you’ll do better in the long term.
