When most beginners start learning how to sell on eBay, they focus on the usual things like how to create auctions and ship items. Although these things are important, your eBay business is much more than that. If you plan to sell many items on eBay, you’ll soon discover that the selling fees add up quickly. Learning about these fees will make you a more savvy eBay seller.

When learning how to sell on eBay you will need to learn that there are three categories of fees. There are the eBay listing fees, the eBay commission fees, and then the PayPal fees. While you may skip out on PayPal to avoid having to pay fees to them, you will probably quickly find that most of the buyers on eBay want to pay with PayPal. There are buyers on eBay that will skip out on bidding on an auction simply because the seller does not accept PayPal. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to avoid using PayPal.

The listing fees on eBay vary from just a few cents to upwards of twenty dollars. There is a big range here because these fees are based on the start price of your auction as well as the features you want to add to your listing. For example, to make your listing stand out with a ‘bold’ or ‘highlight’ feature, you’ll pay more.

The eBay Final Value Fee is a percentage that eBay gets after your auction is over and a sale was made. It is based on the final selling value of your item. You will probably hear many people complaining about these fees within the eBay structure. Some people complain that they spend hundreds of dollars a month in fees. While that may seem like a lot, it really is not considering that they are making several thousand dollars a month.

Some people wonder about other auction sites that have cheaper fees or even allow sellers to list items for free. While this is true, the main advantage of eBay is that there are many more customers who know about the eBay website. Also, eBay spends millions of dollars advertising their site to bring more people in. The more people eBay brings to the website, the more customers you have and the better chance you’ll have to sell your items at a profit.

As an eBay beginner learning to sell on eBay, it’s important that you are aware of what your seller fees will be. Instead of waiting until the end of the month and being surprised by a bill from eBay, keep track auction-by-auction or week-by-week. That way, you’ll never be caught off guard.
