Very few people are able to make money after the first 30 days of running an online business. But if you optimize your website immediately, you can then ensure that you will get free traffic and set your site up for success in the near future.
SEO or search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your website to rank high in the search engines. There are two parts to SEO, on site and off site.
Optimizing your index page for keywords is the first step of the process. You need to do some research first to select what keywords you are going to use. Find a keyword phrase that best describes your website to your visitors and one that gets a lot of searches per day but little competition.
It may not be wise to choose keywords that have the highest number of searches per day because they will most likely have the most competition. When you are just starting out, it will be very hard for you to get to page one for the most competitive keywords because your competitors will have a huge head start on you. Find keywords that will be attainable in a few months and that will land you at least some traffic. Any traffic you get is better than no traffic at all.
Once you have your keywords selected then you go about placing your keywords strategically throughout the site. You’ll want to add your selected keywords throughout the content on your home page. You’ll want to add your keywords in the following areas throughout your website; meta tags, alt images, and about 3% of the words on your page should be your keywords. You should also include your keywords using various header tags in your content as well.
After your website is optimized for your keywords you then need to pick up back links using your keywords in a hyper link or anchor link. Do a search for information on how to add your keywords in hyper link style.
You shouldn’t have to spend any money to pick up back links to your website. You can submit your website to the thousands of directory listings, write and submit articles, leave comments on blogs, participate in forums, and use social bookmarking services just to name a few.
Your website will slowly move up the rankings as you continue to pick up back links on a daily basis. Set daily goals to hit to ensure that you are consistent with getting back links. After awhile, you should see that your website will eventually make it all the way up to the top spot. Until you see your website sitting on top of the search engines for your keywords, never stop.
