Getting good search engine rankings used to be easy just a few short years ago. However, that is not the case any longer. There is a little bit of work that needs to be accomplished before seeing your site ranked on the first or second page.

A good first step in your search engine ranking is to research your topic and keywords. Keywords are the words that people are using when doing searches on the Internet. If you can harness the exact keywords that people are searching for, you’ll have a greater chance at getting a better ranking with the search engines.

The second key point to getting good rankings is developing good relative content for your site or blog. Without good, though out content, no one will want to come back to your site. If writing is not a strong point, consider hiring a freelance writer to write the content for you. Don’t forget to include your important keywords in your content in the first 100 words or so before the page fold. Anything above the page fold is prime real estate to the search engines.

Lastly, the biggest contributor to good page ranking is links. It is important to have good internal page links that reinforce established keywords. More importantly, inbound links pointing to your site or pages in your site based on keywords is the most important. The search engines base your rank on credibility more so that just aiming at popular keywords. The more links you can get from other high ranking sites with similar content to yours will make a huge difference.

One way of getting an outside link, is by writing articles and press releases. Submitting articles and press releases to directories, helps you by establishing your own credibility and having links from your articles point to your web site or blog.

Although, there are more technical details to getting good rankings with the search engines, these are the key things to remember when setting up a web site or blog. If the content is great and people like it, they will tell others as well and this will boost your rankings with all the above ideas combined. If the content is nothing special or if you do no work at improving your rankings, your site is worth nothing.
